Forever Saving For A Rainy Day – 2021 Blog Round Up & A Happy New Year Thank You

I sat in a work meeting in November where our boss took a moment to remind everyone we’d been living through, and continued to live through a global pandemic. It really made me stop and reflect as they spoke about how at times it seems as though we’ve forgotten this and piled the pressure back on ourselves to be functioning at 100% in bizarre circumstances that are everchanging. They spoke of the reality that we’ve been through some absolute insanity in the last year and a half and perhaps we need to take a moment to realise this and be a little kinder to ourselves.

In taking that moment it was almost like looking back on a tick list of everything I’ve done in the year and not really given myself credit for or even really processed. In terms of Forever Saving For A Rainy Day I realised just how proud I am of myself for fulfilling my first complete year of sharing blog content twice weekly amongst all of this madness whilst juggling so many changes and so much uncertainty in life.

I’ve called my blog and accompanying social media accounts a life boat amongst the chaos before and that still remains true. Writing, posting, interacting with other accounts and more has been a real support system for me when times have been tough. Everyone last one of you that has ever visited my site is always appreciated and I’m so thankful for the journey Forever Saving For A Rainy Day has brought me on. I’m by no means trying to pretend that everything has been plain sailing highlights all year with this post at all but given the current state of the UK I wanted to focus more on the positives from 2021. Let’s get to the good bits.

Skin Related Highlights From 2021

February delivered overwhelming shock and excitement when I received my first ever gifted products from the infamous REN Skincare. They reached out via Instagram offering to send me a replacement of an exfoliant I love after I commented on one of their posts I spent a good 30 mins thinking it was a scam. I checked their account countless times to see the blue verification tick before responding. It felt like a real “pinch me, is this happening?” moment that brought a huge ray of sunshine to the start of my year.

When I first created FSFARD it never occurred to me that I’d be on the receiving end of PR packages. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to receive several packages this year from skincare, to eco friendly items and recycled jewellery. This is something I will never take for granted and each delivery makes me feel like an excitable child at Christmas. I’m always so grateful to the brands that like what I do enough to send things my way. It is rare that I’m obligated to share reviews but as I love doing so these are always written and just because something is gifted doesn’t mean I sugar coat it.

2021 became the first full year in many that my skin was reliably manageable and whenever I inevitably got spots I really couldn’t have cared less. This is certainly a polar opposite feeling to where I was at 6 years ago. Another mindset shift happened in 2021 towards skincare. Pre-2020 I was scared to switch up routines in case it had negative side effects. Once I got over this there was no stopping me. I had my eyes on so many cult products and rarely turned down a beauty bargain. This year I’m proud of myself for “shopping my stash” and working my way through the products I have. I’ve not bought a great deal. This has come from a place of wanting to do better for the environment.

Eco Highlights From 2021

I’ve lost count of the number of swaps I’ve made this year or ways I’ve tried to reduce waste. I’ve made changes with how I dispose of things such as composting and soft recycling. I’ve tried eco conscious skincare, gone for zero waste products like deodorant and razors and branched into refillable and reusable items more than ever. Cleaning and laundry products have also had an overhaul.

A relative of mine often says that these changes are all very well but a bit meaningless until the big giants responsible for pollution etc pull their fingers out. Whilst I understand their point, I can’t really do much to change that, but making swaps throughout my lifestyle is something I can do and I get a little buzz out of each successful one. Thinking I’m doing my bit over nothing at all makes me feel good. I’m far from perfect but still really pleased with myself for making over 20 changes this year.

Money Highlights From 2021

Favourites for me have definitely been decluttering and making money from my unwanted items. In terms of cashback groceries I’ve claimed £131.44 from Green Jinn, £44.50 from Checkout Smart and £90.76 from Shopmium. These apps have enabled me to donate to food banks at zero cost which has felt rewarding. I’ve claimed almost £50 from Top Cash Back just by going through their website before making online purchases. I don’t usually shop much online but have started to time spends with their £2 bonus cashback offers.

Thank You

A huge thank you from the bottom of my heart to every single person that has interacted with this corner of the internet in 2021. Whether that is liking a single Instagram or blog post, sharing, commenting, or simply visiting my content it is wonderful to see just how far and wide this has reached since I started posting. I began blogging in the midst of the first UK lockdown in a global pandemic and in the last 18 months have experienced feelings of isolation, worry, stress and loneliness with life feeling like a roller coaster. Forever Saving For A Rainy Day has made me feel more connected, helped me combat some really hard days and been a place of comfort and joy. I feel as though I’ve made friends and gained a support network through some of the wonderful individuals that follow me on Instagram too. You are all hugely appreciated, thank you for being here for the ride.

Wishing you all a safe, healthy, Happy New Year.

Rate Or Hate? A Review Of All The Serums & Facial Oils I Tried For My Acne Prone Combination Skin In 2021 – The Ordinary, Peace Out & Herbivore

The Ordinary Niacinamide Zinc Serum – RRP £8.90 for 60ml

I’m on my 3rd or 4th bottle of this. After buying 2 small 30ml ones consecutively and realising my skin loved it I jumped straight to the bigger size bottle which is even better value for money.

Likes: brilliantly affordable, helps manage oil levels of my skin so I look less shiny, helps with hyperpigmentation, non sticky, doesn’t break me out,

Dislikes: it can pill if you get a bit heavy handed with applying but this is such a minimal complaint

Rebuy? Yes. I’m tempted to try The Inkey List niacinamide but as this works for me I’m happy to continue using it.

Peace Out Acne Serum – RRP £31 for 30ml

I was gifted this product with no obligation to review. I was sent a mini bottle with a squeezy dropper and as the serum is much thicker in texture it was quite hard to get out of the bottle. It wasn’t impossible, but could take a few attempts of squeezing the pipette to get the product. To empty the bottle I had to remove the dropped lid, turn it upside down and tap it on my hand for a while.

Likes: contains niacinamide and salicylic acid but is gentle enough for every day use, caused zero sensitisation, beautiful heavenly lavender scent, felt luxurious to use, non sticky almost gel-cream texture.

Dislikes: more time consuming to use than The Ordinary Niacinamide serum, didn’t help control oil levels as well and more expensive.

Rebuy? I’d use this again without complaint but I personally wouldn’t go out and pay £31 for this. I found the thick texture made me really conscious of product waste. There’s still a load that would do 2 or 3 applications I can see moving in the dropper but it just won’t come out. It just seems like a bit of a waste which is a shame because I do love the experience of applying this. It smells so soothing and feels like a real self care moment.

Herbivore Lapis Facial Oil – RRP £63 for 50ml

I was kindly sent a tiny bottle of this from A Day In The Life Of Annie and it’s only now I’m writing this post that I’ve looked up the price – all I can say is wow. I was really excited to try this as Lou Northcote, the creator of the free the pimple hashtag, has raved about this for her acne prone skin. I’ve also been a bit wary of oils on my face, this is the first one I’ve tried and it felt like a safe bet with Lou’s recommendation of it!

Likes: non greasy or slimy, hydrating, soaks in beautifully in seconds, a little goes a long way

Dislikes: the price! I’m not keen on the smell, I’ve tried sniffing it loads to describe this and the best I can do is say something food like or maybe even like Play Do’h

Rebuy? No. No way can I cope with paying £63 for one product that feels nice to use but ultimately isn’t revolutionising my skin. It feels lovely and silky to use and makes me feel glowy so I’d use it again if I came across a mini in a beauty box offer but I wouldn’t go out of my way to get my hands on it in the future.

The Final Word

The clear winner for me here is The Ordinary.

December ’21 – A Round Up Of All The Samples & Free Items This Month & How I Got Them

Somehow we’ve hit the last month of the year. I feel like time has been utterly bonkers since March 2020, either feeling like it’ll never end and as though the last few months never really happened whilst simultaneously flying by. My focus in December wasn’t on going bonkers with claiming freebies. With the Omicron situation in the UK getting a bit tense I definitely hunkered down for quite a bit of this month and limiting my trips out for peace of mind. My major outings were to the supermarkets hence there being plenty of food items on here.

Beauty

24 Perfume Samples – I asked at the counter in Superdrug when paying for a clearance item about perfume samples as I this month I was putting together low cost beauty gifts to donate. The cashier kindly took my bag and emptied handfuls into it. I’m so grateful as this enabled me to pop together some really lovely little parcels without breaking the bank.

Pack Of Hair Bobbles – These came free via TK Maxx Treasure rewards scheme. These arrived after I’d finished distributing my Christmas gifts so these will be kept for future gifting.

Shockingly I can’t recall any other samples that came my way beauty-wise in December. Admittedly I stopped claiming quite a few bits in a bid to do better for the planet but will blame Christmas for other samples not making it in the post during this month!

Food

3 x 500ml Fizzy Drinks – Dr Pepper, Sprite and Coke Lime bottles were all free on Shopmium. I picked these up to donate to a food bank

3 x 1L Mighty Pea Milks – I got these for free thanks to Green Jinn. The cashback was approved within minutes of me submitting, the fastest I’ve ever seen. I managed to get 4 litres of vegan milk and the 3 bottles of fizzy all in one trip to Tesco early in December. Having boxes in my hallway to gradually add free cashback items into for donating felt really fulfilling.

Wunda 950ml Pea Milk – free via Shopmium in Tesco. Like the fizzy drinks and Mighty milks this was also added to donations.

6 Cans Of San Pellegrino – Thanks to a sponsored advert on social media with Hashtings promotions. I received my cashback via my PayPal account after uploading proof of purchase

2 x Mighty Milk Shakes – I’m not personally a fan of these but the brand let me know that as these are long life they don’t need to be kept in the fridge. So as long as they’re free I’ll claim these to either give to friends or donate to a food bank.

Cadbury Secret Santa Chocolate Bar – This popped up as a sponsored advert on Facebook for me. I filled in the details to have this sent to a relative as a surprise. The squares are Christmas tree shaped!

Rate Or Hate? A Review Of Every Cleanser I Tried For Second Cleansing In 2021 – Combination Acne Prone Skin – Cerave, Avene, Smacne, Bioderma, Alpha H, Beauty By Zero.

I wrote a round up like this at the end of 2020 whilst on the hunt for a favourite cleanser for my combination adult acne prone skin. Since then I’ll confess I’ve become a huge skincare addict so just kept trying new things as I enjoyed the experience. As the year has gone on my goals have changed slightly. Rather than just wanting to try famous skincare products I am now more keen than ever to make better choices for the planet.

2020’s overall winner for me ending up being the Cerave Hydrating Cleanser. Not long into 2021 I completely rejected this product and fell in love with the brand’s new Cream To Foam Hydrating Cleanser which I’d only been using for a couple of weeks the previous December. 2021 saw me venture into double cleansing and whilst I didn’t notice a miraculous transformation I’d say my skin overall was slightly clearer and I loved the act of self care.

To make sure I didn’t miss anything out I started compiling this post back in June! Here goes:

Cerave Cream To Foam Hydrating Cleanser – RRP £13 for 236ml

At the time of publishing 2020s round up I’d only been using this a few weeks. I’ve since fallen in love with the creamy, gentle, hydrating formula which allows me to use active ingredients safely without fear of stripping my skin barrier. I use this as a second cleanse and don’t really trust the idea of this being used to remove make up.

Likes: reasonably priced, gentle, never leaves my face feeling tight

Dislikes: I can’t think of any

Rebuy? I would happily use this again but I’m trying to make better choices for the planet so will be trying more cleansers.

Smacne Exfoliating Aloe AHA BHA Cleanser

I was kindly gifted this from Smacne and felt really torn after using this. Their products can only be bought as a duo including this cleanser and a super non irritating benzoyl peroxide treatment. This cleanser didn’t wow me anywhere near as much as the incredibly Acne Treatment did. I certainly couldn’t have used it twice a day and had to balance this out using the earlier mentioned Cerave Cream To Foam Hydrating Cleanser.

Likes: didn’t leave face feeling totally stripped, zero stinging, smelt great,

Dislikes: too strong for twice daily use for my skin with or without using benzoyl peroxide alongside, very sad that their products can’t be bought separately.

Rebuy? I really love their Acne Treatment and found it as effective as prescription medication with less irritation so I find it hard to answer this. If they could be purchased individually I wouldn’t buy the cleanser.

Avene Cleanance Cleansing Gel – RRP £12 for 200ml

Kara Olivia Beauty kindly sent me this after opening and finding it unsuitable for her skin. I was really grateful for the opportunity to try this as I fell big time for Avene’s Cleanance Expert moisturiser around the same time. Unfortunately I wasn’t a fan of this but I appreciate it is labelled for oily skin and mine is combination. I found this too strong for twice daily use and then too much for once daily use. It’s worth noting that I use a niacinamide serum and exfoliant regularly. I relegated this to the shower to use more infrequently after washing my hair, I also began using it on my legs as I experience bumps on the insides of my knees.

Likes: I had to dig deep for plusses as I quickly felt like this just wasn’t for my combination skin or preferred skincare routine. It never stung or caused redness which some cleansers have for me in the past so that’s something.

Dislikes: left face feeling too squeaky clean, couldn’t use daily, caused dryness in a short space of time

Rebuy? No. If you’re reading this looking for a gentle gel cleanser for addressing acne I previously used La Roche Posay’s Effaclar Purifying Cleansing Gel for years and loved it. I only stopped after introducing prescription retinoids into my routine.

Bioderma Sebium Foaming Gel Cleanser RRP – £11 for 200ml

I got a 50ml bottle in a Feel Unique Beauty Kit and using this just after the Avene product made me remember why I loved used gel formulas for so long. I didn’t expect to like it and had largely given up on gel cleansers thinking them too much for my skin given the rest of my routine. I was wrong, this was a delight to use.

Likes: zero stripping feeling, non drying, no stinging, fresh smell, lathered beautifully, little went a long way

Dislikes: can’t think of any

Rebuy? I would use this again but as I’m hunting for a more environmentally friendly cleanser I won’t be repurchasing

Beauty By Zero Hydrating Face Wash RRP – £9.99 for 100ml

I received this as a PR product.

Likes: The brand are eco conscious and affordable. Their packaging is made from sustainable sources like this tube made from sugar cane which has less environmental impact than plastic and is still recyclable.

Dislikes: none come to mind at all.

Rebuy? YES!

Alpha H Balancing Cleanser RRP £30 for 185ml

I received this as a PR product also.

Likes: surprisingly affective at removing mascara, gentle, hydrating, no pump so better in terms of recycling, no irritation and enjoyable to use

Dislikes: I don’t think this is worth the price, it does just as good a job as Cerave’s Hydrating Cleanser which is significantly cheaper

Rebuy? No, I couldn’t justify the price.

The Winner

  • 6th Place – Smacne
  • 5th Place – Avene
  • 4th Place – Alpha H (purely because of the price tag!)
  • Joint 3rd Place – Bioderma & Cerave
  • 1st Place – Beauty By Zero

The Beauty By Zero product meets my skin’s needs and my goals to be more environmentally friendly. It is easily accessible in places I shop like Holland and Barrett and Tesco. Super affordable and pleasant to use.
